This week, students from 3rd, 4th, and 5th class, along with their teacher Mr. O'Sullivan, are busy planting vegetables in the school's poly tunnel! The poly tunnel is a special greenhouse that provides an excellent environment for growing a variety of vegetables and fruits.

What Are We Planting?

Here are a few of the plants the students are growing:

  • Tomatoes: Tomatoes are a favorite because they are versatile and can be used in many dishes. They thrive in the warm, controlled environment of the poly tunnel.

  • Strawberries: Sweet and juicy strawberries are a delightful treat. The students are excited to watch the strawberry plants bloom and produce delicious berries.

  • Corn: Corn is a fun crop to grow, and the tall stalks add a lot of height and interest to the poly tunnel. The students can't wait to see the ears of corn develop!

  • Onions: Onions are a staple in many dishes and are relatively easy to grow. They will be ready to harvest later in the season.

The Planting Process

The students are learning all about the planting process with Mr. O'Sullivan's guidance. Here's what they've been doing:

  • Preparing the soil: The students are helping to prepare the soil by removing weeds and adding compost. Healthy soil is essential for strong, healthy plants.

  • Planting the seeds: After the soil is ready, the students carefully plant the seeds at the right depth and spacing.

  • Watering: The students make sure to water the plants regularly to keep the soil moist and encourage growth.

  • Caring for the plants: As the plants grow, the students will learn how to care for them by pruning, weeding, and monitoring for pests.

What the Students Are Learning

This project is teaching the students important lessons about:

  • Responsibility: The students are responsible for caring for the plants and ensuring they have everything they need to grow.

  • Patience: Growing vegetables takes time, and the students are learning to be patient as they wait for their plants to grow and produce food.

  • Science and Nature: The students are gaining a better understanding of how plants grow and the natural world around them.

  • Teamwork: Working together in the poly tunnel is helping the students develop teamwork skills as they help each other with the planting and care of the plants.

Looking Forward

The students are excited to see how their plants will grow over the coming weeks and months. Soon, they will be able to harvest the fruits of their labor and enjoy the vegetables and fruits they've grown. It's a rewarding experience for everyone involved, and the students are looking forward to tasting their fresh, homegrown produce!
